Cologne score coup with Copenhagen hero Solbakken
19.05.11
Stale Solbakken had better know what he does. To go to FC Cologne, 43-year Norwegian order to abandon a sinecure little as coach of the Norwegian national team, he was ready to take over in early 2012. And it was certainly a good thing going at FC Copenhagen.
Solbakken is set for its fifth title in six Danish Superliga, and his last season at the club has also been more emphatic. Copenhagen head the standings with a margin of 24 points squarely obese, and with three matches still to play, they stuffed 75 points short of a league record.
In addition, it was the season when Copenhagen became the first Danish team to enter the knockout stage of the Champions League. Unsurprisingly, Solbakken has reached legendary status with fans in Copenhagen, who fear the good times may be longer.
Lifting the Mood
Unless you have a killer surround sound system on the TV at home, it might be awhile before Solbakken the Champions League theme music bombastic stadium ringing in his ears again. His challenge in Cologne is to restore stability after a turbulent season. This is essentially the same challenge all coaches of new faces in this most chaotic of Bundesliga clubs, but last season was really a doozy.
