Carol Cloud Bailey: Ylang-ylang adds fragrance to landscape as well as perfume
07.05.11
Often considered the most "perfect perfume in the world," Chanel No. 5 is the subject of many myths. We know that the scent is a mixture coveted and contains among other oils of ylang-ylang, neroli, rose and jasmine.
It was created at the request of Coco Chanel in 1921 by renowned perfumer Ernest Beaux.
ylang-ylang trees are legendary for their dazzling flowers fragrant. Considered by some to be the most heavenly scented tree in the world, this native of India and Southeast Asia is classified in the same family of plants such as sugar and cream, apples. It is a tropical tree that is resistant to frost.
A tree with broad oval leaves drooping, ylang-ylang flowers sporadically throughout the year, but most strongly in summer. The flowers are yellow-green drooping petals that are most fragrant at night and are pollinated by moths. For commercial purposes, the flowers are harvested in the morning and the essential oil is extracted by distillation. It takes about 200 pounds of flowers to produce 1 to 2 liters of oil.
The war changed everything. Women were forced to wear the trousers while their men were away. The experience challenged and toughened them. After the war, women embodied a more forceful character in every way they expressed themselves, including their fragrances. But then couturier Gabrielle Coco Chanel broke the rules by revolutionizing and democratizing fashion in its various formsfrom clothing to accessories, including perfume.
The Chanel No. 5 Juice I want to give womena scent that smells like a woman, not like a flower, Chanel said.
In 1921, Coco commissioned Russian perfumer Ernest Beaux to create what would become the ultimate Chanel masterpiece and greatest classic perfume of all timean abstract floral overdosed and overpowered with sparkling yet heavy synthetic chemicals called aldehydes.
Chanel No. 5 was ahead of its time as a composition. It was impactful, long lasting, unique and libertarian in its essence. The juices signature hasnt changed since its creation, yet its attributes have evolved to become aspirational in a more classic and feminine way as opposed to being the edgy, abstract rule breaker it was in its early years.
For decades, Chanel No. 5 has remained a bestseller around the globe. Interestingly, the juice doesnt test well blind, but when women experience it within the context of the Chanel brand, a certain je ne sais quoi happens just like magic, and women just embrace it.
The Chanel No. 5 Experience Its flacon is a simple square bottle with a rectangular top. It has been altered only minimally since first designed by Coco Chanel. Black and white colors and straight lines convey simplicity and purity. The black is not just black; it is the blackest possibly attainable. The famous double-C logo created in the early 1920s embodies all elements Chanel and remains strategically unchanged. The glass feels heavy, conveying quality. The simple style of the overall package holds...
I was once trapped in an elevator with a big-earringed woman whose Chanel No. 5 was turned up to about 14. A hint of perfume can be an alluring and sensual pleasure, ladies, but it's another thing entirely to smell like a Bath & Body Works exploded.
Chanel No 19, the baby sister of No 5, is being reinvented. Susannah Frankel charts the evolution of this inspirational fragrance Jacques Polge, exclusive composer of fragrances for Chanel, known in insider circles simply as 'le nez', has been thinking
For people who insist on possessing design-conscious books, this is one shaped in the iconic form of the No.5 by Chanel. This is a general history of perfumes, from the antiquity to the present day. An estimated 30 000 fragrances are currently present
Chanel No.5, for example, would be just another floriental were it not for the addition of aldehydes – the synthetic that gives it its characteristically frosty sparkle. By contrast, most natural fragrances tend towards insipid florals and aren't
Chanel No. 5 is hardly “mass” (despite the 1921 floral aldehyde being the best-selling perfume in history), yet Creed's prices easily eclipse that $98 eau de parfum. So how has Creed retained its exclusivity? “Chanel No. 5 is an iconic scent,” says
