Call that a job? Beauty writer Sali Hughes and sons Marvin, 6, and Arthur, 3

Every morning we have a ritual where I'm sitting on my bed and put on my make-up while my son, Marvin, nearly six years, and Arthur, three and a half, watching TV next to me. As I sat transfixed as my grandmother used its red and Yardley perfume, my kids barely looking up from Scooby-Doo.

As a mother of a son and a feminist, I wanted to avoid gender stereotypes, but as any parent will tell you, there is some wiring, whether or not you have fun. When I turn my beauty tutorials, they headed directly toward the camera.Arthur likes to have her nails painted (it is currently the deputy toes green bottle Estee Lauder and Topshop purple) and yet, Marvin, 28 months her senior, is already horrified at the idea. Only two years ago that I was screaming at him to loot my makeup bag and covering himself, and my white sheets, cream blush pink. Now he should eat earlier mud.

Boys are generally indifferent to beauty.They have, on occasion, told me I'm beautiful, especially when they saw me in a magazine, but it feels like a phrase they picked up from television rather than something they have thought. I do not think they notice how I look, for which I am grateful, because I am a certain distance from the scruffiest mom at school dropped.
